Hotel Transylvania (Rated PG)
Starring: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, and Ceelo Green
Directed by: Genndy Tartakovsky
Synopsis: Welcome to Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up and no humans are allowed. One special weekend, Dracula (Adam Sandler) has invited all his best friends – Frankenstein and his wife, Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Werewolf family, and more – to celebrate his beloved daughter Mavis’s (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday. For Dracula, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem but the party really starts when one ordinary guy stumbles into the hotel and changes everything!
My Thoughts: There was a lot of hype around this animated film. I heard for weeks how hilarious it was. Unfortunately even if you don’t want it to, hearing positive or negative things can raise or lower your expectations. My expectations were high enough that I was expecting a Finding Nemo or Monster’s Inc. animated comedy. I was disappointed. The plot was okay. There were parts that were extremely clever, but not enough to make up for the movie as a whole. Mavis was kind of a whiner. I found myself wondering, “you’re 118 years old why don’t you go out and do what you want?” Then again, it would’ve been a pretty short movie if she’d gone beyond the next “town” over. In the end, the funniest part for me is quoting the movie with friends. I would not recommend this, unless you’re watching it with kids (more than likely, they’ll love it).
2.5 out of 5 Popcorn Buckets (I’m somewhere between not liking it and liking it)
