Top Ten Tuesday: Top 10 Books/Movies to Read or Watch to Get in the Halloween Spirit

toptentuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is a fun weekly link-up in the community where The Broke and the Bookish provides a prompt and other lovers of list making join in on it with their own top ten list. You can have less than 10 or more if you need to at times and put a spin on the topic if you need to! All they ask is that you link back to them if you’re participating.

I’m so excited for this week’s Top 10 list.  Halloween and Thanksgiving are my favorite holidays.  Halloween has all of the spookiness and fun.  Personally, I’m a massive wimp when it comes to scary things (specifically scary movies).  It doesn’t matter if it’s horror, suspense or thriller; I still end up with nightmares.  Books don’t generally have the same effect on me, but there are always exceptions.

So this week I split my list into 2 parts.  Here are my Top 5 Movies and TV shows to Get in the Halloween Spirit and my Top 5 Book to Get in the Halloween Spirit.  I did try to limit myself on the amount of zombified material listed.  I wanted everyone to find something on this list, not just my fellow zombie readers.  Hopefully you’ll find something appealing to help you get in the Halloween spirit, if you’re not already.

Top 10 Books/Movies to Read or Watch to Get in the Halloween Spirit

1.  Supernatural – This show has the best mix of “Halloweeny” things.  There are all kinds of creatures and people.  At this point I still love the show, but I feel like I’m watching just to see how they can possibly come up with a new episode each week.  I would’ve been out of ideas years ago.

2.  Once Upon a Time – The costume ideas alone make it worth watching.  But then they had to go make the characters likable and then you get hooked and can’t stop watching.

3.  The Walking Dead – This is zombies the way they should be done.  Bloody and gory to the max (or at least as much as you can put on a non-HBO channel).

4.  Hocus Pocus – I watch this every year on Halloween.  I can’t handle legitimately scarey movies, so this one is perfect for me and I Put a Spell on You is very catchy.

5.  Disney’s Halloweentown series – I know this may seem like a really lame choice, but it’s actually pretty awesome.  If you have kids, you can definitely watch them together and if not you can watch for the nostalgic value.  You’ve got Halloweentown, Halloweentown 2:  Kalabar’s Revenge, Halloweentown High, and Return to Halloweentown (they changed the main actress for this one and I was peeved, but ultimately still like it).

Honorable Mention:  Zombieland – I couldn’t resist.  I truly love my zombies.  Plus this movie exceeded every expectation I had when I first saw it.

1.  It by Stephen King – or Cell or really anything by Stephen King.  I’ve unintentionally turned October into my Stephen King month.

2.  The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman – It was weird and spooky, which made it a perfect read for getting me ready for Halloween.  Look out for an upcoming review.

3.  The Hollows series by Amanda Hocking – They’re about the zombie apocalypse, so it’s the perfect choice (especially around Halloween).

4.  Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling – I’m dead serious about this choice.  I’m planning to re-read them before Halloween.  Not that I need a reason to do this, but all of the magic and magical creatures make it the perfect series for Halloween spirit lifting.

5.  The Seeker’s Burden series by Mark Lein – There are enough creepy characters involved in this series to make it a worthwhile October read to ready you for Halloween.

I hope you got some ideas to help you get into the Halloween spirit, if you’re not already there.  Any recommendations for me?  I absolutely love Halloween and can’t get enough of it all.

  1. Supernatural! What a great choice. Hocus Pocus made the top spot for my list of movies.

    • I’m kind of obsessed with Supernatural so there was no question that it would be on my list. 🙂 Thank you for stopping by and Happy Halloween!

Oh, I’m currently reading The Graveyard book 😀 I lvoe it so far. Also, Walking Dead. Excellent movie 😀

    Here’s my list

    • I was a bit slow to love The Graveyard Book, but by the end I just wanted it to keep going. And no list is complete without some zombies. 😀 Happy Halloween!

  3. Awesome recs! I love Halloween too, but I’m mostly a scaredy cat. I can’t believe I haven’t started Supernatural yet- I hear so many good things about it. Zombieland is one I need to catch up with too. Have a Happy Halloween!

    • Supernatural is kind of perfect whether you’re really into horror or a bit of a scaredy cat. There are just certain episodes that are scarier than others. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you have a Happy Halloween too!

  4. You’ve got two book pics I’ve never heard of, but I love King, Gaiman and Rowling, so I’ll look those up. Happy Halloween!

    • Hopefully you’ll enjoy them! Thank you for stopping by and Happy Halloween to you too 🙂

  5. I love, love the Halloweentown series! It was one I use to watch all the time as a kid around Halloween! Now, I hardly ever get to watch it! This year for Halloween I at less want to watch one! & Harry Potter! That is one I watch/read every year to help get the Halloween feeling! Great list!
If you feel like it please feel free to see mine here

    • I do the same thing with HP every year. 😀 And as dorky as it is to admit, I have the entire Halloweentown series on DVD so that I can watch it around Halloween. Thank you for stopping by!

      • There’s just something about Harry Potter that just helps bring out that Halloween feel!
Oh, lucky you! It’s all good, I’m a sucker for dorky stuff; not that I count that as dorky, dorky, more as you have good movie taste!
        You’re welcome!

  6. Can you believe I’ve never seen Hocus Pocus? Yeah, I should probably watch that. Harry Potter, The Graveyard Book, The Walking Dead, Supernatural, ZOMBIELAND!!!! So much yes.

    • You definitely need to watch that asap. It doesn’t feel like Halloween unless I watch Hocus Pocus. I’m glad you pretty much agreed with the rest of the list though. 🙂 And I LOVE the enthusiasm for Zombieland (because it’s amazing)! 🙂
